Abstract

The two largest cities of Eastern Iowa on the shore of the Mississippi River are Dubuque and Davenport. In each city, an elite group of German-Iowan leaders emerged by the late 1850s. Bill Roba describes and examines their strategies in celebrating the Centennial of Alexander von Humboldt’s Birth.

Bill Roba

William Roba was recently appointed as a Professor Emeritus at Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa. He has taught History for the last 44 years, after taking his M. A. from Cornell University, and receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa. He was a Commissioner for the Iowa Sesquicentennial commission, 1993-1997; Fulbright Professor of American Studies at Drohobych University in western Ukraine for 2008; he is currently President of the Society for German-American Studies.
