Abstract

During his expedition to Russia in 1829, Alexander von Humboldt was almost constantly accompanied by government security forces. Studies in the past have usually seen this escort as an attempt to control the liberal researcher. This article shows that his armed company was probably meant to protect Humboldt rather than to supervise him. Therefore, the article analyzes potential threats on the route of the expedition, how the escort adapted to them and how far the guards would have been able to control him anyway. The most important sources are Humboldt's written communication, the travel account by his friend Gustav Rose and the recently published diaries of his companion Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg.

ER -
