Summary

The American Travel Diaries represent a challenge for the studies of historical epistemology. Based on the failure of their explicit attribution to a well-defined literary genre, this paper wants to emphasize the exceptional position of the volumes as instruments of experience, which, at the dawn of the 19th century, grant access to the ontological optimism, as well as to the methodological sampling of a scientist, writer and explorer, who becomes manifest as experiencing subject. On the one hand, the multi-functional character of the Diaries as log-, travel- and sketchbooks seems to distance them from the formal order of scientific writing, on the other hand, they unveil the prerequisites for epistemological processes that lead to scientific knowledge. Within the Kantian coordinates of space and time, Humboldt seems to follow his own epistemological rhythm of situational experience concerning nature and world by means of a dynamic storage medium.
ER -
