Summary

In 1806, the court painter Friedrich Georg Weitsch began a painting showing Humboldt in front of the Chimborazo. A file in the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation provides new insights to this. Weitsch produced the painting, which was commissioned by the Prussian Academy of Sciences and then ordered by the King of Prussia, according to Humboldt`s instructions. Presumably, on his own authority, he added an inscription on the expedition crates to declare Humboldt’s journey to America as a Prussian expedition and to enable the king, as sovereign, to share in the great fame of the scientific enterprise. The subtitle of the painting is not “Prussian Expedition of Alexander von Humboldt” as previously assumed, but “Described by Alexander von Humboldt”.
